Chapter Six

Reuben’s attention was being pulled in every direction. He hadn’t had a chance to catch up with many of his friends since he’d come back and now everyone was here, and they all wanted a part of him. He had spotted Leah in the distance, but someone had called his name, and when he looked back towards Leah, she was gone. His plan was to talk to her, perhaps she knew what was up with Mary.

When he had finished with his friend, there was no sign of Leah until he caught a glimpse of her leaving the picnic. He wondered what had happened as her pace made it look like she couldn’t get out of there fast enough. He was been so looking forward to talking to her and thought asking her about Mary would break the ice. She seemed like a really nice girl.

In fact, he thought this would be great opportunity to get to know her more. Leah seemed to be on his mind quite a lot since he’d met her. Being back in the community was more tolerable since he’d met her as he found himself a little more content even if he had to be a carpenter.

How was he going to talk to her if she wasn’t here?

Then he saw Mary, and he made his way towards.

“Mary, what’s happened to Leah? I just saw her leave, I wanted to talk to her.”

Mary couldn’t believe her ears. Why did he want to talk to Leah? She was her friend, not his. Mary’s eyes narrowed. She couldn’t have this, not at all.

“I’ve no idea. She was here one minute and gone the next.”

Mary lied as she looked at her brother trying to gauge his reaction. He looked disappointed, and it annoyed her for some reason. Then he turned away from her without another word.

In the meantime, Myriam had found Leah’s mother and told her that Leah had gone home. Mrs. King hurried home. What had happened to make her unwell? Leah had been so excited to come to the barn raising. When she got home, Leah was in her room and refused to come out. Mrs. King left Leah alone.

Reuben left the picnic. He couldn’t explain it, but he needed to see Leah. It felt important to talk to her, and he decided to go to her house. She had looked upset. Had she got bad news? But as he neared it, he wasn’t quite sure what he was going to say. He said a prayer that Gott would make him say the right thing. How was Leah going to react to him? He still couldn’t understand what had happened to make her leave the Miller’s barn raising. It had to be something important.

“I hope she didn’t see me and think I ignored her.”

Then it registered that they were looking at each other before he could react to her. Had that upset her? Did she think he deliberately ignored her?

He never wanted to be the cause of hurting anyone, especially Leah.
